Library, Archives and Learning Services

Archives and Research Collections

borthwick-institute@york.ac.uk 

Comprised of the Borthwick Institute for Archives, the University Rare Books Library, the University Art Collection and the partnership with York Minster Library.

We care for and provide online and physical access to historic records dating from the 11th century to present day.

Content and Open Research

Acquire and manage all the library's information resources and collections, both physical and digital, as well as both purchased and open access.

Our content and collections support the teaching and research activities across the University.

Digital Inclusion, Skills and Creativity (DISC)

Our DISC team is responsible for user education in the application of digital technologies for learning, teaching and research. We provide digital skills support to all University members, including staff members, students and researchers.

Library - Customer Services

Our Customer Service team is responsible for delivering frontline enquiry support and assistance to visitors to the Library whether they be students, staff or members of the public.

We can be reached both remotely and in person and ensure our users can access the building, resources and help services.

Faculty Librarian team

Faculty Librarians offer embedded information literacy teaching, bespoke support for students and consultancy for academic staff to ensure the library meets their teaching and research needs.

The team is led by Faculty Engagement Managers. As well as managing the team and representing LALS on faculty committees, the Faculty Engagement Managers each lead on a specialist area of our work: Collections, Community + UX, and Skills.

Careers education, advice and guidance

Our team provide high quality, professional careers education, advice and guidance to University of York students and curriculum development consultancy and support to academic departments.

The team work directly with students to build self-awareness, opportunity awareness and decision-making skills to allow for positive career choices and a smooth transition from university into the world of employment.

Employer Engagement and Events

Our team leads on our employer engagement activity, connecting students and graduates to employers through events, opportunities and vacancies.

Information and Student Engagement

Our team provides the service's initial contact point for students (and often employers, staff and other external enquirers) responding to these enquiries or referring to other more appropriate sources of help.

The team maintains the service's website and identifies information needs - researching, writing and presenting new resources. Their student engagement work responsibilities result in mass and targeted communications, marketing campaigns and promotional work.

Our team offer a range of work experience opportunities through York Internships, the Placement Year programme and Enterprise at York. The team work closely with students and employers to promote the value of work experience.

Volunteering

Our team develop volunteering opportunities for students within the City of York that help support local communities and provide meaningful work experience for students.

Student Development and Leadership

Our Disability Services team provides advice and support to students with disabilities, including the provision of Student Support plans outlining academic adjustments for students who have a disability or disabilities.

International Student Support Team

Our team provides support and advice for student conduct and discipline matters, and offers specialist and discreet support for students who have experienced sexual misconduct.

Open Door Team

Our Open Door team provides psychological interventions to students who are experiencing psychological and/or mental health difficulties.

Student Support Advisor Team

Our Student Advisors are available to provide support and advice to students around:

Additionally, they deliver initiatives to support student from underrepresented groups.

Student Information Team - Student Hub

A central point of contact for student support delivered by the 'student hub' providing a range of advice and support such as finance, money management, housing queries, international student support (visa and immigration).

Campus Safety

The Campus Safety Team operates 24/7, 365 days a year and are the primary point of contact outside of normal working hours and are the first point of contact for security, medical, social and wellbeing related issues, providing advice and guidance to stakeholders at all levels across the university on safety and security related issues.

We provide a friendly and high visibility presence to help keep all our people and assets safe and secure. Regularly contributing at events to promote our team, encourage personal safety and to create an environment where everyone feels safe.

Support To Study

Support to Study brings together support from across the University and beyond to help give students the tools to make a success of their time at York.

This service is here for those students most at risk and least engaged with study and/or support. It considers the risk for the students, the University community and preserving degrees when students are unable to make decisions themselves.

Academic Practice

The Academic Practice Team provides support for academic staff, teams and professional services staff who design curricular and teach, or who are otherwise involved in supporting student learning.

We adopt and promote an evidence-informed approach, drawing on current good practice and sector benchmarks to offer general and bespoke professional development and advice, to encourage scholarly approaches to learning and teaching, and to facilitate opportunities for staff to secure recognition for their contribution to the student learning experience at York.

Academic Quality

Our Academic Quality team provides specialist advice and guidance to faculties, schools and departments on developing and enhancing taught programmes, managing programme quality and academic standards. This includes interpreting national frameworks, metrics and student surveys.

Apprenticeships

Our Apprenticeships team helps to develop higher and degree apprenticeship programmes at the University, working closely with academic departments and professional services teams, working in partnership with University staff and employer partners to manage the quality assurance and compliance of apprenticeship programmes, in line with external regulatory requirements.

The Special Cases team is responsible for investigating and considering academic appeals and resolving complex taught student progression issues, such as certain types of leave of absences, programme transfers, programme extensions and variations to standard programme arrangements for individual students.

Student Financial Support

Guidance, administration and delivery of assistance funding for current students including emergency loans, student support fund, York bursaries and US direct loans.

Our Student Records team ensures the overall quality of data held in the University's student records system (SITS).

The team works closely with colleagues across student and academic services, academic departments and other professional services to support student activities from enrolment through to graduation.
