Strategic Insight and Analysis Team

The Strategic Insight and Analysis Team has the aim of developing, disseminating and embedding high quality interactive data visualisations and business intelligence provision to over 500 staff in support of the University's plans, together with assisting in the delivery of external reporting requirements which facilitate UK and global benchmarking. The Unit has a strong ethos on the appropriate use of visual information design principles (Tufte, Few), and on selecting the most appropriate tools for a task from a toolkit which includes Tableau, Business Objects, and VBA.

We are responsible for:

  • data exploration and visual analysis, working to meet the needs of academic departments, support directorates, committees and individuals
  • through the DISCOVER project, empowering decision makers and information experts in a range of business areas, enabling them to answer their own questions through provision of training, support and curation of trusted datasets
  • institutional research and planning, including development of planning models, forecasting, and sector benchmarking
  • statutory data collections, including those made to HEFCE, HESA and OFFA
  • the Management Information Service, including the administration of the Management Information Gateway, Tableau Server, and other business intelligence development tools

We are part of the Planning and Risk Office, and are a team of 8 based in Heslington Hall. Examples of teams we've worked with recently include:

  • Careers on analysis of the Destinations of Leavers in Higher Education survey
  • Student Recruitment and Admissions on redeveloping our applicant tracking reports
  • Academic departments on analysis of University league tables
  • Information Directorate on gaining insight about student experience from library survey data
  • Academic departments on the annual Key Information Sets submission
