Canadian Student Loan

You can apply for a student loan through the Canadian Student Loan Programme.

Country specific scholarships

Canadian Centennial Scholarship Fund

£5,000 per year. These scholarships offer £5,000 each year to eligible Canadians studying for a postgraduate degree who have completed their first year of study.

Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Doctoral Foreign Study Award

CA$35,000 . The Doctoral Foreign Study Award (DFSA) provides special recognition and support to students who are pursuing a doctoral degree in a health-related field abroad.

Commonwealth Scholarship

various. The University of York is a host university for the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission. Various opportunities are available throughout the year. The majority of awards are funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

IODE War Memorial Scholarships

$15,000 to $25,000 CAD. These scholarships are awarded to Canadian citizens in at least the second year of their doctoral program at a Canadian or Commonwealth university.

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Doctoral Fellowships

$21,000 CAD for three years. The NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships – Doctoral (PGS D) program provides financial support to high-calibre students who are engaged in an eligible doctoral program in natural sciences and engineering.

Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Doctoral Fellowships

$40,000 CAD. SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships support high-calibre students engaged in doctoral programs in the social sciences and humanities.

Other sources of funding

There are a number of external funding bodies that exist to support study in the UK. Government departments, international agencies, charitable organisations and private companies may also be able to provide financial support for certain subject areas. If there is a local British Council office near you they can provide up-to-date advice on what is available for your country and you can search for scholarships online.

Undergraduate entry requirements

If you are studying a diploma awarded by Provinces and Territories completion of Grade 12 will be considered for entry. You will need to achieve between 75-85% overall from 4-6 subjects at Grade 12. Requirements may vary depending on the Province and the course you're applying for.

If you are studying for a Diploma (2 or 3 year), awarded by a recognised Ecctis Higher Education Institution, we will consider these on a case by case basis and you will need to achieve a CGPA out of 4 of between 3.0 and 3.6 overall.

Other post school qualifications may be considered for entry to York on a case by case basis.

Postgraduate entry requirements

Postgraduate taught courses

For a postgraduate taught course, such as a Masters, you would normally need a Bachelors degree from a recognised institution.

Typically you would need at least the equivalent to a UK upper second class honours degree, however some courses will accept lower second class honours degrees. Actual requirements will vary by course.

  • A score of 3.0 out of 4 or 75% is considered comparable to a UK 2:1
  • A score of 2.5 out of 4 or 62.5% is considered comparable to a UK 2:2

For 3 year degrees awarded without honours:

  • A score of 3.3 out of 4 or 82.5% is considered comparable to a UK 2:1
  • A score of 3.0 out of 4 or 75% is considered comparable to a UK 2:2

Research degrees

For a research degree, such as an MPhil or a PhD, you would normally need a Bachelors degree plus either a Masters degree in a relevant subject or some experience of conducting research.

How to apply

Undergraduate

To apply to York, you will need to complete an application via UCAS (the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service).

Postgraduate

You can apply online for taught Masters courses and research degrees. You can apply all year round in most cases but we recommend that you apply as early as possible due to competition for places and funding application deadlines.

Students who choose to be counselled by an agent should expect the following standards of service:
