Democracy on Trial: The promise of democracy

Sunday 7 June 2026 10.45am - 1pm

Organiser: York Festival of Ideas
Location: RCH/037 Lecture Theatre (Ron Cooke Hub, Campus East)
Open to: Everyone

Democracy is in the dock. Looking back at its origins, was the system always flawed? Is the current crisis simply the result of an economic model that was always at odds with political equality – the ‘one person, one vote’ ideal?

Our keynote speaker, Big Tech insider-turned-critic Dex Hunter-Torricke takes to the stand, with a cross-examination by journalist and author Gavin Esler. Dex is followed by other expert witnesses, including Claire Ainsley, Director of the Center-Left Renewal Project at the Progressive Policy Institute; Danny Dorling, a leading UK geographer; Paul Cartledge, an expert on Ancient Greece; and journalist Daniel Trilling. Our chair for this section of the proceedings is Sam Fowles, a barrister specialising in public and constitutional law.

Join our citizens’ jury as we put our system on trial. Hear the evidence, witness the cross examination and cast your vote. The defendant is democracy. The verdict is yours.

Organiser: York Festival of Ideas
Location: RCH/037 Lecture Theatre (Ron Cooke Hub, Campus East)

Digital disruption, the rise of authoritarianism and polarisation, a failure to deliver for marginalised groups and future generations. Is democracy fundamentally incapable of navigating 21st century threats? Expert witnesses present the evidence of modern-day collapse.

Speakers taking to the stand include digital journalism strategist Emily Bell, Founding Director of the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia Journalism School, New York, US; Saad Mohseni, Chairman and Chief Executive of Moby Group; John McDermid, Director of the Centre for Assuring Autonomy at the University of York; Elizabeth Seger, Senior Policy Advisor at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change; and barrister Sam Fowles who specialises in public and constitutional law. Democracy on Trial: The verdict and the road ahead

Sunday 7 June 2026 4pm - 5.30pm

Organiser: York Festival of Ideas
Location: RCH/037 Lecture Theatre (Ron Cooke Hub, Campus East)
Open to: Everyone

Every day it feels like the world is fracturing. Trust in leaders is gone, money dictates politics and the future can seem bleak. Has democracy outlived its usefulness – or is it our only hope?

Join our citizens’ jury as we put our system on trial. At this session we decide: is democracy too flawed to save or can it be reclaimed? Our expert witnesses examine whether a radical shift to hyper-local, citizen driven action could be the way forward. Speakers include Kate Pickett, co-author of the award-winning and best-selling The Spirit Level and The Inner Level, historian Patrick J Houlihan of Trinity College Dublin and journalists Gavin Esler and Alexander Hurst. The session is chaired by Joan Concannon, Chief Reputation and Stakeholder Relations Officer at the University of York.

After the summing up, the verdict is yours.
