3D capture with Photogrammetry

Wednesday 15 April 2026 2pm - 4pm

Organiser: Digital Skills & Creativity Lab
Location: LFA/103 Creativity Lab (Harry Fairhurst Building, Campus West)
Open to: Everyone

Have you ever come across a detailed 3D model of a real object and wondered how it was made? In this hands-on session, you’ll discover how a series of standard photographs, combined with some software magic, can be transformed into a 3D digital model—a process known as photogrammetry.

We’ll start by photographing a university sculpture and sharing some top tips for capturing great images. Then, you’ll get a chance to process the photos yourself. Along the way, we’ll explore what to do when things don’t go quite as planned and share helpful tricks to refine and tidy up your model for viewing.

This session will show you how to digitize objects related to your work or study and demonstrate how 3D scans can captivate and engage audiences with the unique aspects of your research or interests.

Academic posters: Designing posters in PowerPoint

Tuesday 21 April 2026 10am - 12pm

Location: online
Open to: Everyone

Informative posters are a popular way to share research findings and other information at conferences and exhibitions. There are many desktop publishing applications you could use to design posters but in this session we'll demonstrate Microsoft PowerPoint: although intended for presentations, it shares many features with other publishing applications and generally has the advantage of familiarity, making it a popular and effective choice for poster design.

In this session we’ll look at the design principles behind what makes a successful poster, and how to configure PowerPoint for the creation of both large-format printed posters and virtual poster presentations. We'll look at how to plan your layout, and how to make best use of images and text in your design.

At the heart of Islamic art lies calligraphy, not merely as a vehicle for communication, but as one of its most revered decorative forms. From early Kufic inscriptions embedded in architectural design to the diverse expressions of contemporary practice, artists across the Islamicate lands have continually pursued innovative approaches to script. This presentation explores key developments in Persian calligraphy, with particular attention to artistic experimentation and stylistic transformation in 19th-century Iran, and their continuation to today.

In this session, focused primarily on postgraduate research but applicable to any research project, we'll consider how to come up with a workable research question with regard to available literature: is there enough information to provide a suitable background? What limits will you need to set? We'll explore how to scope a range of different sources, including academic, government and organisational literature.
