Support for international students affected by recent events in the USA

The University of York was founded on the principles of openness, inclusivity, internationalism, and the free exchange of ideas.

We proudly uphold these principles today, including offering practical assistance where sudden restrictions may disrupt a young person’s education and future prospects.

We have reached out to our friends and counterparts in the United States to align any of our efforts and jointly explore how we can support students impacted by any policy changes.

We also recognise that, as a result of recent events, some students who have started a degree in the USA may be considering the option of transferring to the UK to complete their degree. Similarly, some students who had made plans to start studies in the US this September may now be reconsidering their options.

We would like to reaffirm our commitment to welcoming students from across the world to benefit from a York education and study in one of the UK’s safest student cities. York is globally recognised for the quality of its teaching and research.

We're one of only four UK universities to be rated both Gold for teaching and top ten for research in the latest national assessment exercises, alongside Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial College London.

We strongly believe international students enhance our community, bringing new perspectives that enrich the educational experience and bring vibrance to our campus. Ranked consistently among the world’s top research universities and set in one of Europe’s most historic cities, York combines academic excellence with a welcoming, globally minded community.

With over 40 Schools and Departments across Sciences, Social Sciences and Arts & Humanities, offering more than 600 undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and with over 20,000 students from over 160 countries (28% coming from outside the UK) represented on our campus, we are truly a global institution.

If you are interested in joining York this autumn, you will be warmly welcomed.  We can offer:

  • Fast-tracked applications and credit transfer for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees beginning in September 2025
  • Recognition of prior learning from degrees you may have started at other institutions
  • Dedicated visa and immigration advice to secure a UK Student Visa
  • Guaranteed accommodation as long as you apply by 31 July 2025

Our international and admissions teams will help give guidance on your specific circumstances. Further information is available via our Study and International pages including ways to contact staff or chat with one of our current students.
