Visas and immigration
If you are an international student you may need to apply for a visa in order to become a full-time student in the UK. Students on a Student Visa (formerly Tier 4 Visa) are not currently permitted to study part-time at York.
Find out whether you will need a visa, how to apply and what documents you may need.
For general information see UK Visas and Immigration (gov.uk).
If you are arriving in the UK after 31 December 2020, you will need to apply for a Student Visa before your arrival if you do not have settled status in the UK.
Getting your confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)
If you require a Student Visa to study in the UK, you will need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). You can request your CAS after you have accepted an offer. We can issue your CAS once your offer becomes unconditional, and not longer than six months before your course starts.
Deadlines to apply for your CAS are as follows:
- Courses starting in September 2020: 11.59pm (GMT), 12 October 2020 (This deadline applies if you are planning on arriving in York on or before 2 November. If you are starting your course online and will arrive after 2 November, we would still encourage you to make your visa application as soon as possible to ensure you have your visa in time for when you plan to come to York)
- Courses starting in January 2021: 11.59pm (GMT), 10 December 2020
- Courses starting in September 2021: 11.59pm (GMT), 15 September 2021
For Masters students - Tier 4 visa pilot
We're part of the Tier 4 pilot scheme for Masters students (likely to finish in October 2020 - to be confirmed).
This provides greater support for students who wish to switch to a work visa and take up a graduate role, by allowing them to remain in the UK for six months after they have finished their course.
York was selected by the Home Office, as our visa refusal rates are consistently the lowest in the region.
