Our constantly changing world presents new engineering challenges on a daily basis. 

Develop your knowledge of electronic, electrical, mechanical and mechatronic principles as you learn how to design solutions to today's biggest engineering challenges. You'll work on group engineering design and project work at every stage, incorporating real-world examples with societal impact. This course gives you the flexibility to choose where you want to focus your studies, meaning you can make your degree your own. 

We build employability into every aspect of our courses. Alongside developing an in-depth understanding of your subject, you'll gain a range of transferable skills that will allow you to take on a career in a number of sectors and thrive in management roles. 

Strong links with industry

The skills you'll learn are directly relevant to the latest developments in engineering such as robotics, artificial intelligence, virtual reality and immersive technology.

Course content

At the beginning of your course, you'll develop a solid foundation in mechanical, electrical and electronic principles and programming. 

You'll take part in extensive laboratory sessions and hands-on project work, during which you'll have the chance to build an innovative medical device, an environmental monitoring station and a robotic water collection and analysis device.

In the final year of your course, you'll study a number of core subjects in control engineering, advanced mechanics and micro-electro-mechanical systems. You'll also be able to choose from a range of advanced options, allowing you to explore a broad range of topics or develop a specialist knowledge of a few areas.

There are opportunities for you to spend time abroad during your course:

Year 1

You'll study five core modules and build an innovative medical device in groups as part of a hands-on practical project.

Year 2

You'll study five core modules. As part of your Stage 2 Project, you'll work together with other students to design and implement an environmental monitoring station.

  • Engineering Mathematics, Signals and Systems (20 credits)
  • Manufacturing and Fabrication (20 credits)
    This module introduces many of the processes that are used for creating parts, including machining (turning, milling, boring, grinding); EDM and etching; welding and brazing; adhesives and fasteners; forming (bending, stamping); casting and moulding; and additive manufacturing.
  • Thermo-dynamics and Fluid Dynamics (20 credits)
    This module includes an introduction to the flow of fluids (fluid dynamics) and the flow of energy (thermodynamics), both fundamental concepts to a wide range of engineering systems.
  • Sensors, Noise and Filters (20 credits)
    You’ll learn about the processing and digitisation of electronic signals from sensors. This module includes techniques for analysing AC circuits using phasors and complex impedances, the effects of non-ideal passive components, and the design of filters. You’ll look at examples of several common sensor types; including pressure, light, proximity and temperature sensors.
  • AC Machines and Power Electronics (10 credits)
    You’ll develop your understanding of electrical machines by introducing the operational principles and characteristics of AC motors and generators, three-phase circuits and complex power. You’ll also look at the design and operation of common AC-DC and DC-AC power converters.

Year 3

In Year 3 you'll work in industry. You can choose to work in the UK or in Europe.

This will develop your professional, time management and interpersonal skills in a structured environment, and gives you a good opportunity to network for your future career. You may find that you want to continue work from your year in industry in your BEng Individual Project.

Your year in industry will be assessed with a report.

Year 4

In Year 4, you'll study three core modules and complete an individual project, developed in consultation with your supervisor. You'll also choose five option modules.

Students who complete this course will be able to:

  • Understand and assess the interface between electronic, electrical and mechanical engineering to create advanced components, devices and systems in general engineering technologies.
  • Extract and evaluate data from general engineering systems through a variety of analytical techniques including computational methods and modelling.
  • Combine electronic, electrical and mechanical engineering to create, design, implement and test systems that address real-world problems aligned with technical, social and economic needs.
  • Apply professional skills of electrical, electronic and mechanical engineering, combined with an understanding of systems and components, to solve technical problems.
  • Clearly communicate and explain information in a succinct and technically accurate manner for audiences of engineers and members of the public, and to write and interpret technical documentation.
  • Coordinate and execute complex projects (with effective time management, team working, and ethical decision making) in preparation for technical careers in electronic, electrical and mechanical engineering.
  • Explain and reflect on the role of the engineer in society and in company structure, and on the nature of their own learning style, based on personal experience in a commercial company or academic research institution.

UK/EU or international fees? The level of fee that you will be asked to pay depends on whether you're classed as a UK, EU or international student.

Fees for subsequent years

  • UK/EU: further increases within the government fee cap will apply in subsequent academic years. We will notify you of any increase as soon as we can.
  • International: fees for international students are subject to annual increases. Increases are currently capped at 2% per annum.

Teaching and assessment

You’ll study and learn with academics who are active researchers, experts in their field and have a passion for their subjects. Our approach to teaching will provide you with the knowledge, opportunities, and support you need to grow and succeed in a global workplace. Teaching format

Our courses are highly intensive. Your timetabled activities each week will include:

  • Lectures
  • Practical work
  • Group project work
  • Workshops
  • Computer laboratories
  • Supervisions

You'll also be expected to spend time studying independently. As you progress through the course you'll take on more independent study, guiding your own learning and developing your project management skills.

Your individual project in your final year will be supervised by an academic member of staff who will guide you through your project.

In the UK, full-time students are expected to spend 1,200 hours a year learning. That's about 40 hours of classes and independent study each week during term time. Everyone learns at a different rate, so the number of hours you spend on independent study will be different to other students on your course.

Facilities

We're building new labs and workshops for our engineering students. Our existing range of facilities includes laboratory space, recording studios, digital media suite and computing classrooms.

Teaching location

You will be based in the Department of Electronic Engineering, on Campus West.

Most of your contact hours will be in the Department of Electronic Engineering, with some additional teaching on Campus West.

About our campus

Our beautiful green campus offers a student-friendly setting in which to live and study, within easy reach of the action in the city centre. It's easy to get around campus - everything is within walking or pedalling distance, or you can always use the fast and frequent bus service.

Assessment and feedback

Your assignments will be designed not just to test your knowledge but also to challenge you to creatively apply what you've learned. We use a variety of assessment styles, including a practical portfolio. You'll encounter all of them during your course, but the exact balance will depend on the modules you choose:

  • Closed-book exams
  • Short technical reports
  • Electronic portfolios, including programming exercises, video reports or blogs
  • Presentations and demonstrations
  • Major technical reports

You'll receive written feedback on work you hand in to help you understand your grade and develop your skills. For your individual project you'll produce a written report, have a viva (a presentation and question/answer session) and also show your project on our demo day, which our external advisory board attend.

A levels

ABB including Maths. Your other two subjects can be any. We welcome arts and humanities subjects.

BTEC National Extended Diploma Pass with Distinction in Higher National Certificate or Higher National Diploma in Electronic and Electrical Engineering or a related subject.

BTEC National Extended Diploma in Engineering with an overall grade of DDM and A level Maths grade B

All applicants need Distinction in Further Maths for Technicians and Distinction in Further Electrical/Electronic Principles.

We do consider applications from people offering combinations of A levels and BTECs subsidiary diplomas, contact us for more advice. Students taking BTEC National Extended Diploma in Engineering but not doing A level Maths will be considered for our degree with Foundation year, but the final decision on which course is most appropriate will be made at interview. BTEC Extended Diplomas in ICT, Music Technology or Applied Science are not suitable for entry into the first year of our courses. However we do welcome applicants with those qualifications for our courses that include a foundation year, see other qualifications below.
Cambridge Pre-U D3, M2, M2 including Mathematics
International Baccalaureate 34 points overall with grade 6 in Maths at Higher Level.
Other qualifications If your qualifications are not suitable for direct entry to one of our degree courses but you think you have the potential to succeed, consider applying to our BEng Electronic Engineering with a Foundation Year course.

English language

If English isn't your first language you may need to provide evidence of your English language ability. We accept the following qualifications:
