Our programmes and activities are designed to give talented sixth form students a taste of university life while encouraging them to apply to a research-intensive university like York. We also provide advice and guidance on practical matters such as student finance and UCAS applications

Many of our programmes are partnerships with specific schools/colleges. However, some activities are open for individual student applications.

During 2022 our Access and Outreach programmes will be delivered virtually with some face-to-face events. We will be guided by government guidelines and University policy. We will work directly with programme participants and our school and college partners to keep you informed of progress.

Next Step York

A programme aimed at talented Year 12 students from targeted schools/colleges. It aims to support application to a research-intensive university through a range of interactive events.

YorWay to York

A programme to support Year 12 students who live more than 100 miles from York to reach their higher education goals and develop the skills and confidence to begin their university journey.

Black Access

A programme aimed at supporting Black students to discover university. Designed in collaboration with our current students, this programme is student-led to give a real insight into life as a Black student at York.

York Experience Summer School

Our residential summer schools give Year 12 students the opportunity to experience the academic and social side of university life.

Realising Opportunities

A collaboration involving research-intensive universities working together to promote fair access and social mobility of students from under-represented groups.

Aspiring medicine students

The Hull York Medical School offers a variety of activities for young people to help raise aspirations and encourage progression into medicine.

Excellence Hub

A collaboration between the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York. Coordinated by York, it offers a range of subject-specific opportunities for high achieving young people in Years 7 to 13.

Academic skills and EPQ conferences

A range of study workshops for Year 12 students and mature applicants. We also offer EPQ conferences to help support students working towards this qualification.

Support and resources

As well as our programme of interactive activities we also offer the following support:

  • Resources for 6th form students: we provide a variety of study resources for pupils who are working on assignments for Realising Opportunities or Next Step York, or an Extended Project Qualification.
  • York Access Scheme: the scheme aims to improve access to the University for applicants who have faced challenging circumstances. It allows students to provide additional information which will be considered alongside their UCAS application.
  • Support for care leavers: students who have been in care can get in touch with our care leavers' contact both before they apply and during their studies at York. We also offer a Care Leavers and Foyer Bursary to help cover the costs of tuition fees and living expenses.

Our flagship undergraduate Open Days take place in June and September. You can make a group booking for your school/college.
