Our MSc Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management course focuses on developing creative mindsets and essential skills for both entrepreneurship and innovation. You will learn knowledge and skills to make a difference in your chosen field, from starting a new business to working in public sector markets, corporate innovation, and beyond.
Course content
You'll study 180 credits in total. The course consists of:

The programme is designed to help you create value for businesses, society, and the environment, as aligned to your career goals and ambitions. We emphasise responsible management, sustainable growth, and impactful research driven by curiosity.
Taught by academics in the fields of entrepreneurship, innovation, strategy, finance and linked business functions, you will gain a broad set of skills to prepare you for your future career. You will have ample opportunities to apply your knowledge and practice your skills to solve complex real-world issues through case studies; entrepreneurial, intrapreneurial or innovation-based opportunities; and work-based experiential projects.

- Explore and evaluate entrepreneurship and innovation management approaches which are sustainable, ethical, socially responsible and contextually aware based on knowledge of contemporary theory and practice.
- Critically apply theories, concepts, tools and technologies in entrepreneurship/innovation management to a venture or an innovation to promote and inform organisational purpose, strategy and objectives.
- Analyse and solve complex problems and challenges in a range of managerial settings by applying understanding of entrepreneurship and innovation management based issues.
- Communicate complex information and well-evidenced arguments effectively and persuasively through different media to a range of audiences to inform decision making.
- Develop an independent and creative mindset to support reflective entrepreneurial leadership and practice within or across disciplinary boundaries.
- Construct a viable business model, policy initiative or management intervention based on good evidence, using various forward planning tools and criteria to assess impact and sustainability.
- Design, deliver and present a significant work-based project in a relevant field that delivers entrepreneurial and innovative solutions to a real world issue.

Through Enterprise Works, the university’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, you will be connected to industry and community initiatives to develop your ideas, build the skills and confidence for starting and succeeding in your business, or any business.
You will also be encouraged to join our student-led Entrepreneurs Society to develop an entrepreneurial mindset while having some fun with like-minded peers.
During your studies, you will also be able to access "Enterprise at York". Students and recent graduates are supported to develop their business ideas and build the skills and confidence for starting up. Whether you're looking for someone to talk to about your idea, want to learn enterprising transferable skills or apply for funding from £250 to £2,000, there's something for everyone.
Teaching location
The School for Business and Society are based in the Church Lane Building on Campus West. Teaching may take place across Campus West, Campus East, or a combination of both.
About our campus
Our beautiful green campus offers a student-friendly setting in which to live and study, within easy reach of the action in the city centre. It's easy to get around campus - everything is within walking or pedalling distance, or you can always use the fast and frequent bus service.
Assessment and feedback
Assessments consist of formative assessments to help you prepare for your final summative assessments.
The programme uses different assessment types including essays, reports, presentations, exams and work based projects. Each one is designed to help embed and assess your learning. For students choosing the applied Dissertation route you will produce an applied report that can take the form of a business or project plan, a business case or a consultancy report for an employer or important stakeholder.
