Module summary

The aim of this module is to develop an understanding of the specific models and theories to manage operations management and supply chains sustainably. On completing the module students should be able to identify sustainable operations and supply chain management strategies and their sustainability effects for a given business context.

Module aims

This module introduces the role, objectives and activities of sustainability in of operations and supply chain management, linking to the specific models and theories to managing operations management and supply chains sustainably. Model selection and use in appropriate situations are covered within the complexity of designing and managing complex operations within global supply chains. On completing the module students should be able to identify sustainable operations and supply chain management strategies and their sustainability effects for a given business context.

Successful completion of the module will demonstrate that students are able to:
- Demonstrate a broad understanding of the key concepts of operations management and supply chain management based on a sustainability agenda.
- Identify the sustainability effects of different operations and supply-chain practices
- Articulate the complexity of designing and managing complex operations within global supply chains.
- Evaluate different approaches to sustainable procurement and supply management.
- Design future sustainable and regenerative supply chains
- Apply appropriate approaches and techniques of operations and supply chain management to improve the sustainability performance of an organisation.
- Propose an appropriate sustainable operations and supply chain management strategy for a given business context.

- The nature of operations management and supply chain management within the sustainability agenda
- Emerging technologies and strategies in sustainable operations and supply chain management
- Supply chain management – supply chain management and sustainability, sustainable sourcing, and sustainable transport and logistics
- Resilience and disruption responses in global supply chains
- Circularity and regenerative supply chains

Teaching Material
These will include: handouts of lecture slides; reading lists, case study materials, group discussions of students’ own experiences
