Please note that some departments may have subject-related work placement arrangements with international organisations through specific Year in Industry programme routes. Alternatively, there may be other opportunities available through the With Placement Year or independent internship providers. 

Departments

These are the departments who offer a Year in Industry programme through which you may be able to undertake an international placement. Speak to your supervisor or departmental coordinator for information on options available to you.

If you are a Language and Linguistic Science student, speak to your department about International work placements as part of your Year Abroad programme.

Placement Year

A placement year is a structured 9-12 month work experience opportunity that can be integrated into your University of York studies, giving you a substantial amount of work experience that is recognised within your degree title. You may take your placement year in the UK or overseas.

Internships

Independent internship providers offer opportunities to work with companies in specified cities across the world to match you in a role relating to your degree and/or professional aspirations. The providers charge for the service, which includes internship matching, pre-departure training, visa support, accommodation, 24/7 on-location support, possible language classes and social, business and networking events. Programme fees and start dates will vary depending on the destination and programme providers.

Using an internship provider can help you find a job in a destination in which you would not normally be able to organise your own opportunity.

The University of York has been working with the following providers to offer you work experience opportunities in a global setting:

The Intern Group has opportunities across the world in the USA and Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia and Latin America. Cities for 2024 to be confirmed.

They have 25 career fields, including Entrepreneurship, NGOs and Non-profits, Government and Politics, IT and Computer Science, Journalism and Media,  PR and Marketing, Psychology and Science.

The cost is dependant on the duration of the programme. Find The Intern Group fees and check whether you're eligible for a discount of $500 USD as a current UoY student.

CRCC Asia South Korea, Japan, China, Vietnam and the UK CRCC Asia offers internships in 8 cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Tokyo, Osaka, Ho Chi Minh City, Seoul and Manchester.

They have 14 internship sectors including Business, Engineering, Finance, Green Technology, Legal, Logistics and NGOs, Charities and Not-for-profits

Virtual Internships

Virtual internships can allow you to work in an international context without leaving your home. The below providers help you source the internships, offer pre-internships training, support throughout the internship, and help you with your skills and career development.

Virtual Internships allows students wanting to gain global work experience with an internship from the comfort of their own homes. The internship is flexible and students can choose to work between 10-30 hours per week (depending on the duration, between 1-4 months) with an organisation anywhere in the world. With 18 career sectors to choose from, students also have access to Virtual Internship's online curriculum (professional development course), two individual coaching calls and skills development tracking throughout the programme.

Applications are required at least six weeks before the start date, with start dates every second Monday throughout the year.

Think Pacific

Fiji

Think Pacific is a registered Fijian Charity and UK social enterprise with over 10 years’ experience supporting Fijian Government Ministries, NGOs, local enterprises and business partners to achieve ethical, responsible and sustainable development, while allowing students to have a self-developing and rewarding experience.

Our virtual programme allows students to contribute to the Fiji National Development Plan and UN Sustainable Development goals across a range of different careers fields. Working on behalf of a Fijian organisation, students complete a social action project that tackles real problems in the South Pacific, while learning about the fascinating Fijian culture and developing global citizenship.

Travelteer

Sri Lanka

The Travelteer virtual internships (PDF , 6,245kb) provide UK University Students with the opportunity to tackle various international development issues and achieve real outcomes for our partners in Sri Lanka. The course specific internships take place remotely, with students working independently on research projects set by the Travelteer team.
