This module is intended to develop the student's understanding of what is required in academic research, and provide support in preparing them for their dissertation. It will also give students experience of all aspects of dissemination of philosophical research, including collaboratively organising a conference at which each student will present and defend a paper.

This module is intended to develop the student's understanding of what is required in academic research, and provide support in preparing them for their dissertation. By the end of this module students should be able to:
Be better able to understand the demands of advanced research in Philosophy, and to engage with work at this level.
Have developed their understanding of good practice in philosophical research.
Have improved their academic skills and research abilities.
Have developed their ability to identify and develop a set of research questions on the basis of critical engagement with a body of literature.
Have delivered a conference paper and defended it in discussion.
Organise research events collaboratively.
The Autumn will be dedicated to a discussion of Research Proposals, discussion of colloquia, and delivering skills provision. The Spring term will be dedicated to discussing the colloquia and writing up the Reflective Journal, and any remaining skills provision. The conference arrangements will be self-organized by the students across the Spring and Summer terms. The Dissertation Outline and Indicative Bibliography will be discussed across the Spring Term, but the lion's share of the discussion for this task will take place between the student and selected dissertation supervisor.
