Module summary

This module develops your core artistic and creative practice by examining a range of approaches to the technical and musical preparation and interpretation of their repertoire.

Module aims

The module aims to equip you with core techniques and knowledge to underpin your creative development as a performer. These may include analytical methods, critical study of performances and recordings, historically informed performance, critical reflection, concepts of instrumental and vocal technique, and other practical approaches to preparation and interpretation.

The teaching is through seminars and tutorials, including in programme-specific cohorts where appropriate.

Throughout the semester, you will develop a portfolio of exercises consolidating your understanding and ability to apply the approaches to develop your own creative practice.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, you will:

  1. Be able to access, critically assess and utilise a range of sources relevant to understanding your own repertoire and developing their artistic practice

  2. Be familiar with a range of practical, critical, analytical, and reflective techniques relevant to their practice, and employ them to support your own technical and artistic development

  3. Be able to identify and critique a range of existing scholarship and artistic work relevant to your specialism

  4. Be able to articulate your research findings and developmental process through performance, writing or presentation
