Module aims

This module will provide a thorough grounding in the principles and practice of qualitative research in the social sciences. Students will be introduced to the concepts underpinning qualitative research, learn how to collect data using fundamental methods, including observation, interviews and archival research. They will learn how to analyse the data they have collected and how to write up qualitative research results.

Module learning outcomes

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

  • Understand methodologies commonly used in qualitative research,

  • Discuss the main issues involved in the collection and analysis of qualitative data,

  • Use qualitative methods, including observation, interviews and archival research,

  • Analyse qualitative data/

  • Describe qualitative research design, including data collection and analysis,

  • Write up qualitative research results,

  • Engage with the ethics of qualitative research.
