How to apply

North and Latin America

North America

We have a number of exchanges in North and Latin America which provide opportunities to spend a year at one of our partner institutions. This can be for replacement credit or as an additional year. Not all opportunities are available for all degree programmes. Please speak to your department or the Centre for Global Programmes for more information.

These guidelines have been produced to help you select the best destination for you academically and personally.

The number of places available at each institution varies each year, for students intending to go in 2019/2020 places will be announced in September 2019.

Priority places do not exclude students from other departments applying for these opportunities

USA

Beloit College 

Beloit College is a liberal arts college in Wisconcin just over the border from Illinois. Priority will be given to History students. 

University of Denver

The University of Denver sits at the foot of the Rocky Mountains.

This exchange is open to most students, but please check your departmental restrictions.

Drexel University 

Drexel University is located in Philadelphia. 

This exchange is open to most students, with one place being reserved for a History of Art (3+1) student, but please check your departmental restrictions

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

UIUC is about 140 miles south of Chicago. Priority will be given to History 3+1 students.

Mount Holyoke College

Mount Holyoke College is a womens only college located about 90 miles west of Boston. 

This exchange is open to most students (female only), but please check your departmental restrictions.

The University of Pennsylvania

The University of Pennsylvania is located in the city of Philadelphia. 

This exchange is open to most students, but please check your departmental restrictions.

University of Rochester

The University of Rochester is located in New York State not far from the Canadian border.

This exchange is open to most students, but please check your departmental restrictions.

Rutgers University 

Rutgers University is located in New Brunswick between Philadelphia and New York. 

This exchange is open to most students, but please check your departmental restrictions.

Wesleyan University

Wesleyan University is a liberal arts college, located in Conneticut. Priority will be given to History students.

Canada

University of British Columbia (Okanagan Campus)

The University of British Columbia, Okanagan, campus is located in the picturesque town of Kelowna in British Columbia's Okanagan Valley. 

This exchange is open to most students, but please check your departmental restrictions.

University of British Columbia (Vancouver Campus) 

The University of British Columbia, Vancouver campus is located twenty minutes from downtown Vancouver.

This exchange is open to most students, with one place being reserved for History, but please check your departmental restrictions.

 Western University (Ontario, Canada)

Western University is located on the banks of the River Thames in London, Ontario.

This exchange is open to most students, but please check your departmental restrictions.

York University (Ontario, Canada)

York University, Ontario is located in the city of Toronto, Ontario.

This exchange is not suitable for students from Computer Science however is open to most other students,please check your departmental restrictions.

 

Latin America

Language and Linguistic students should check with their department regarding the deadline for applying for the opportunities in Latin America.

Universidad de las Americas, Puebla, Mexico (UDLAP)

UDLAP is located near Puebla, 120km southeast of Mexico City. Priority will be given to Language and Linguistic Science students.

Students will be required to be proficient in Spanish for this exchange.

Pontificia  Universidad Católica De Chile (PUC)

PUC is located in the city of Santiago, Chile. Priority will be given to Language and Linguistic Science students.

Students will be required to be proficient in Spanish for this exchange.

Asia

We have recently increased our exchange links in Asia which provide opportunities for undergraduate students to spend a year at one of our partner institutions.  This can be for replacement credit or as an additional year. Peking University, China 

Peking University is located in the Haidian distrcit, northwest of  Beijing. Priority will be given to Philosophy and History of Art students.

Students studying at PKU on 3+1 degrees will not be required to speak Mandarin. However, students applying to study as an integrated part of their degree will be required to speak Mandarin to HSK level 6.

The University of Hong Kong

The University of Hong Kong located in Pokfulam, Hong Kong. 

This exchange is not suitable for students from PEP on replacement credit. This exchange is open to most other students, but please check your departmental restrictions.

In addition to the general exchange there are specific places available to York Law School and York Management School students.

City University of Hong Kong

City University of Hong Kong is located in Kowloon, Hong Kong.

This exchange is open to most students, but please check your departmental restrictions.

Chinese University of Hong Kong

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)Morningside College is located in Sha Tin a suburb in northeast Hong Kong. Priority is given to students from James and Derwent College to apply to study for a full year. Students from other colleges may apply.

This exchange is not suitable for students from Education. This exchange is open to most other students, but please check your departmental restrictions.

Additional Funding Opportunity:

Students of Derwent College can apply for funding up to £250 from the Derwent Development Award, towards the cost of this exchange.

Applications for this bursary will open in April/May 2019, followed by an interview, after which they will be advised as to whether they have been successful.

National University of Singapore

The National University of Singapore  is located in south west Singapore adjacent to Kent Ridge.

This exchange is not suitable for economics students, including PEP

This exchange is open to most other students, but please check your departmental restrictions.

Keio University, Japan

Keio University is located in Minato, Tokyo.

Due to language restrictions this exchange is more suitable for students taking an additional year, but please check your departmental restrictions

Waseda University, Japan

Waseda University is located in Shinjuku, the centre of Tokyo. 

This exchange is open to most students on an additional year, but please check your departmental restrictions. Students must have achieved a minimum 60% grade average in their first year to qualify for this exchange.

Tohoku University, Japan 

Tohoku University is located in Sendai, Miyagi in the Tōhoku region. Priority will be given to MChem students. Other STEM students can apply but please check your departmental restrictions.

Please note: only fluent Japanese speakers (N1 level) are eligible for this exchange.

Seoul National University, South Korea 

Seoul National University is located in the southern part of Seoul. 

Due to language restrictions this exchange is more suitable for students taking an additional year, but please check your departmental restrictions

Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

Nanyang Technological University is located in the western part of Singapore, near the border with Malaysia. 

This exchange is open to most other students, but please check your departmental restrictions. There are reserved places specifically for MChem students.

 

Departmental Specific Exchanges

Management School - National Chengchi University, Taiwan

National Chengchi University is located in the western part of Singapore, near the border with Malaysia. This exchange is only available to York Management School students for replacement or additional year. (excluding those on the ABFM degree programme)

Law School - Singapore Management University

Singapore Management University is situated in the central business district of Singapore. This exchange is for Law students only on additional year.

Science Faculty - Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan 

Tokyo Institute of Technology is located in the Greater Tokyo area. 

Chemistry - Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

Nanyang Technological University is located in the western part of Singapore, near the border with Malaysia. There are places reserved specifically for MChem students.

Australia

The University of Sydney is located across Sydney's inner city suburbs of Camperdown and Darlington.

The University of Western Australia

The University of Western Australia is located on the West Coast 5km from Perth on the Swan River.

This exchange is open to most students, but please check your departmental restrictions.

South Africa

Exclusive opportunity for Arts and Humanities students.

We currently have one exchange in South Africa available for an undergraduate student. This can be for replacement credit or as an additional year. Rhodes University is located in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. This exchange is only open to Arts and Humanities students, but please check your departmental restrictions.

Russia

Higher School of Economics, St Petersburg

HSE St Petersburg is located in St Petersburg, the historical capital of Russia on the Baltic Coast. This exchange is reserved for History and Politics 3+1 students (studying single honours on the four-year 'with a year abroad' programme).
