University-wide Exchanges are open to students from most subject areas.

Check the Opportunities by subject page to see if your degree programme offers the opportunity to study abroad on exchange. There are also things to consider when you are contemplating where to go abroad and what to do.

Places on our University-wide Exchanges are allocated centrally and can be competitive as they are open to students from across the University.

Please note that the number of places available at each exchange destination can vary from year to year. The number of places available for the 2024/25 academic year have been updated. If you have any questions on the availability of destinations please email global-opportunities@york.ac.uk

How to apply

We have a number of exchanges which provide opportunities to spend a year at one of our partner institutions. This can be for replacement credit or as an additional year. Not all opportunities are available for all degree programmes. Please speak to your department or Global Opportunities for more information. This information has been produced to help you select the best destination for you academically and personally. The number of places available at each institution may vary each year and there may not be any places available at some of our partners. Global Opportunities cannot be held responsible for the content of external websites.

Language and Linguistic students should check with their department regarding the deadline for applying for the opportunities in Latin America. Semester only exchanges are currently only available to students from Language and Linguistic Science.

As part of your internal application for an additional year abroad, you may be able to include ISEP Exchange as a destination. Start your ISEP research by looking at the ISEP Program Finder and applying the ISEP Exchange filter for your field of study.
