Support for grants scheme

Posted on 23 April 2020

A team from the University is working with City of York Council on a £1m fund for small and micro businesses that don’t qualify for government support.

Assessors from the School for Business and Society and the Research and Enterprise Directorate are assessing applications for the fund which was launched before Easter.

Grants

The Council’s micro business grants scheme will deliver grants of up to £1,000 for 1,000 self-employed, micro and small businesses.

Amanda Selvaratnam, Associate Director of Research and Enterprise and Head of Enterprise Services at the University, said the grants were designed to help businesses that have fallen through the safety net of government support during the current Covid-19 crisis.

“We are working with the Council to help process applications for the grants. Our team of assessors is made up of academics and professional services staff all of whom have volunteered to be part of this city-wide project which aims to support small businesses and secure jobs.”

Important

Simon Brereton, Head of Economic Growth at City of York Council, said: “This is an important scheme for the city’s small businesses who are currently facing unprecedented economic pressures. We really appreciate the support from the University to help manage the high volume of applications we are expecting for the grants.”
