Why study Engineering with Audio Technology at York?

Core Modules

Academic integrity module

In addition to the above you will also need to complete our online Academic Integrity module.

This module covers some of the essential skills and knowledge which will help you to study independently and produce work of a high academic standard which is vital for success at York.

This module will:

  • define academic integrity and academic misconduct
  • explain why and when you should reference source material and other people's work
  • provide interactive exercises to help you to assess whether you've understood the concepts
  • provide answers to FAQs and links to useful resources.

  • Apply in-depth knowledge of engineering principles relevant to audio technology and sound-based systems, integrating physical, electronic, and computational approaches to assess and evaluate solutions informed by current research, standards, and technical documentation.
  • Analyse the performance of engineering systems, including electronic and audio technologies, using appropriate mathematical models, simulation tools, and computational methods to support design decisions and investigate and resolve engineering problems.
  • Design cost-effective and technically sound solutions to real-world problems by integrating engineering, computational, and audio technologies, translating functional and user requirements into clear and testable engineering specifications while considering risk and practical constraints.
  • Apply professional engineering tools and techniques, including software development, circuit design, modelling, experimental methods, and instrumentation, to implement, test, and evaluate engineering and audio technology systems safely and effectively in laboratory and practical contexts.
  • Plan and deliver engineering projects using effective time management, teamwork, and inclusive professional practice, communicating engineering and audio technology concepts clearly and accurately to diverse audiences through written, verbal, and multimedia formats.
  • Evaluate the societal, environmental, ethical, legal, and economic implications of engineering and audio technology solutions, demonstrating professional responsibility, awareness of equality, diversity, and inclusion, and commitment to sustainable engineering practice.

Fees and funding

The fees and funding information here is for students starting in the 2026/27 academic year.

If you take a year abroad or year in industry you'll pay a reduced rate of fees for that year.

The UK government has announced its intention to increase tuition fees from £9,790 to £10,050 for the 2027/8 academic year. We expect this to apply to new UK (home) undergraduate students starting their studies in September 2027.

UK (home) or international fees?

The level of fee that you will be asked to pay depends on whether you're classed as a UK (home) or international student. Check your fee status.

Fees for subsequent years

  • UK (home) fees may increase within the government fee cap in subsequent academic years. We will notify you of any increase as soon as we can.
  • International fees are subject to increase in subsequent years in line with the prevailing Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate (up to a maximum of 10%).

In the UK, full-time students are expected to spend 1,200 hours a year learning. That's about 40 hours of classes and independent study each week during semesters. Everyone learns at a different rate, so the number of hours you spend on independent study will be different to other students on your course.

You will be based in the School of Physics, Engineering and Technology, on Campus West.

Most of your contact hours will be in the School of Physics, Engineering and Technology, with some additional teaching on Campus West.

You'll learn through a combination of standard engineering assessments alongside practical, project-based and portfolio-style work. Alongside examinations, reports, laboratory reports and presentations, students may be assessed through:

A levels

ABB including Maths.

BTEC National Extended Diploma We consider a range of BTEC qualifications equivalent to 3 A Levels, or in combination with A Levels or other qualifications. For example:

DDM in the BTEC National Extended Diploma plus A level Maths grade B

DD in the BTEC National Diploma in any subject plus A level Maths grade B

D in the BTEC National Extended Certificate plus AB at A level including Mathematics

We consider BTEC Level 3 National Diploma/ Extended Diploma with Unit 7- Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems and Unit 8- Further Engineering Mathematics in place of A Level Mathematics.
International Baccalaureate 34 points overall with grade 5 in Higher Level Mathematics - Applications and Interpretation or 5 in Higher Level or Standard Level Mathematics - Analysis and Approaches.
T levels We are currently not accepting T Levels for this course unless an additional A Level (or equivalent qualification) in Mathematics has been taken.
Scottish Highers / Advanced Highers Advanced Highers - B in Mathematics plus Scottish Highers - BBBC

We may also be able to consider three Advanced Highers or a combination of Highers and Advanced Highers, where an applicant does not meet the grade requirement through Highers alone. Please contact us to discuss your qualifications.
International foundation programme Foundation Certificate from our International Pathway College or an appropriate alternative.
Other qualifications We consider a wide range of academic and vocational qualifications as long as Maths is obtained at A level or equivalent. We are happy to talk to you about your individual qualifications profile. We also offer a Foundation Year BEng Music Technology Systems with a Foundation Year for those not taking Maths A level which, following successful completion, allows you to progress onto one of our BEng or MEng courses depending on your Foundation Year average marks.

Additional requirements

For our Music Technology courses, you should be able to demonstrate a motivation towards making or recording music. You can tell us about your musical interests in your UCAS personal statement. If you are based in the UK and are invited to interview, we will discuss your musical interests and motivation as part of the interview process.

Some examples of how you could demonstrate this would be:

  • That you play an instrument or sing. This could be through formal music qualifications or as a hobby, for example as part of a band, choir or orchestra
  • That you are involved in making music with technology eg you record/mix music or have experience of live sound for events such as theatre or church services.
