Module summary

This module introduces students to fundamental audio theory and practical skills to enable them to design, implement and test their own audio signal processing routines and then apply them in their creative work. A range of platforms for implementation is considered, with mathematical theory being introduced in lectures such that it can be applied in context during practical sessions.

Module aims

 

To provide an inter-disciplinary environment through supporting lectures to provide a background to the use of advanced sound design methods for creative audio/visual applications.

 

To provide the mathematical fundamentals to enable the exploration of basic digital audio processing algorithm design.

 

To provide a hands-on environment in which advanced audio effects techniques and technologies can be explored through the implementation and testing of real-world audio processing design briefs.

 

To introduce a range of low, mid and high level algorithmic development programming tools as used in research and industry for design, simulation and testing.

 

To develop and encourage professional production values through technical expertise and reflective learning.

 

To enhance an understanding of the relationship between low-level sound designers and visual effects artists.

Module learning outcomes

 

Upon completion of this module students are expected to be able to:

 

Demonstrate an understanding of the mathematical fundamentals of digital audio signal processing.

 

Demonstrate an understanding of fundamental digital audio signal processing algorithms.

 

Demonstrate basic skills and competencies in a range of computer based tools for the development and implementation of digital audio signal processing algorithms.

 

Demonstrate practical experience of algorithm development through simulation and testing.

 

Design, implement and test a high quality, real-time audio processing effect for creative audio/visual use.
