Module summary

The module explores the theories and practical approaches to strategic management and change in the public and private sectors in the context of a globalised economy. It focuses on how organisations develop strategy and manage change, and on the skills and techniques that managers need for effective strategy formulation, implementation and evaluation.

Module aims

The module explores the theories and practical approaches to strategic management and change in the public and private sectors in the context of a globalised economy. It focuses on how organisations develop strategy and manage change, and on the skills and techniques that managers need for effective strategy formulation, implementation and evaluation. From undertaking the module, learners will develop their critical thinking, reading and writing skills, understand how to interpret debates in academic literature, and how to develop their analytical and argumentative styles for assignments.

Module learning outcomes

  • Develop the ability to scan the business environment from a strategic perspective

  • Demonstrate theoretical understanding of strategic management as an academic field and an awareness of the skills and techniques required for effective strategic management

  • Evaluate strategic management processes and techniques in a range of settings and contexts, including in the context of the global economy

  • Apply the theories and concepts introduced by the module to a range of organisations and management settings

  • Critically analyse the impact of strategic management within a range of organisations.

  • Strategy making in business organizations

  • The development of the different schools of strategic thought

  • Corporate governance and strategy

  • Business models and strategy

  • CSR and strategy

  • Critique and application of strategy matrices and analytical mnemonics

  • Global strategy
