Your Voice at York

At York, student voices help shape our courses, services and support. Through feedback and partnership, you can contribute to improvements across university life.

Your views and experiences are important to us. At York, you can share your perspective in many ways, including through surveys such as the National Student Survey, student representation with our Student Feedback Volunteers and the Student Expert Panel. We use your feedback to understand what is working well and where we can improve courses, services and support. Your insight also helps shape our Access and Participation Plan and projects such as the Student Success Projects Fund, which brings staff and student partners together to develop more inclusive teaching and learning.

Student Expert Panel

The Student Expert Panel (SEP) was created in 2019 and is a key part of the University’s Access and Participation Plan and commitment to promoting equality of opportunity for all students. The purpose of the SEP is to put students at the heart of University decision-making, project & service development. The SEP works in partnership with University teams to ensure they are drawing directly on the diverse perspectives of students when designing & reviewing their approaches.

Meet our current panellists

Who sits on the Student Expert Panel?

The SEP is made up of around 15-20 undergraduate, postgraduate, home and international students from a diverse range of backgrounds. Members do not necessarily need prior experience to sit on the Panel. The idea of the SEP is that students are experts in their own experience.

What will I do as a SEP member?

SEP members have the opportunity to share their expertise, lived experiences and ideas with the University. You will collaborate with a range of University teams on a range of topics, informing the design, monitoring and/or evaluation of key initiatives. The priority role for SEP members is to inform teams on how policies, services and projects can most effectively promote inclusion and belonging for all students. SEP members will also design and facilitate student voice workshops with their peers.

How can I get involved?

We recruit members for the SEP each year. They meet on Wednesday afternoons throughout the academic year.

Who identifies as an underrepresented group?

We particularly encourage applications from students who come from an underrepresented group, this helps us ensure we are hearing from a diverse range of students.

Underrepresented groups include but are not limited to:

  • students from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds (including students from Gypsy, Roma or Traveller backgrounds).
  • mature students (those aged 21 or over on the first day of undergraduate study at York).
  • disabled students (this includes students with long-term health conditions, specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD, autistic spectrum conditions and mental health conditions)
  • students with a gender identity different to that assigned at birth
  • students who identify as LGBTQ+
  • students from military families
  • care leavers and care experienced students
  • estranged students
  • students who have unpaid caring responsibilities for a parent, family member, partner or friend
  • students with children
  • students with refugee status in the UK
  • home students whose home postcode falls within IMD (Index of Multiple Deprivation) 1 or 2 areas (see postcode checker)
  • home students who were eligible for free school meals in high school and/or sixth form/college
  • students whose student finance maintenance loan allowance indicates household income less than £35,00
  • students who are the first generation in their family to go to higher education, (including if a parent went to university as a mature student)
