Module summary

This module provides information on the nature of biodiversity, its value to society, the legislation and current standard survey methods in use in the UK. Students will apply this knowledge in associated practicals, seminars and field trips.

Module aims

This module aims to provide students with a background to the nature of biodiversity and how it is measured, assessed and managed. There will be a focus on industry-standard approaches to develop employability and professional skills.

Students will be provided with practical industry standard training in how to assess sites for biodiversity and survey for species. They will learn how sites are managed to enhance biodiversity and how that management is supported.

Module learning outcomes

  • Students will be able to access, read, understand and implement current UK legislation for site and species protected and biodiversity enhancement
  • Students will be able to assess the biodiversity value and conservation status of sites using industry standard mapping and biodiversity databases
  • Students will be able to discuss the role of emerging technologies in managing species and habitats
  • Students will understand the key principles of managing important UK habitats and species
  • Students will understand the importance and application of landscape approaches to enhancing biodiversity

Module feedback

Written feedback will be provided on assessment in accordance with the University’s Policy on Assessment Feedback Turnaround Time. Written feedback will also follow DEG guidelines, with scripts annotated and a feedback form provided.
