Module summary

This module introduces fundamental sustainability concepts, theories and strategies for managing the environment. The knowledge and skills developed throughout this module will provide foundational understanding for further modules and for the workplace.

Module aims

This module introduces fundamental sustainability concepts, theories and strategies for managing the environment. The lectures will be used to set the context to the module, and to introduce blocks of theoretical material which will then be used and applied in seminar discussions.

Module learning outcomes

On completion of this module a student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an awareness of the interdisciplinary nature of environmental management, the relationship between the environment and the economy, and the linkages between these concepts and sustainability.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of general sustainability models, concepts, theories and strategies, debates between various theories and their application to current issues at local, national and international level.
  • Apply appropriate concepts to sustainability in the global economy.
  • Evaluate key sustainable development indicators including social dimensions of sustainable development e.g. poverty reduction, gender and development, and social development indicators.
