Module content

Students on this module will be educators, or be supporting education, within the health professions. It is in this capacity that they will be leaders, they do not need to be in a formal leadership role to participate.

Through undertaking this module we intend that they will become:

(1) better equipped to be involved with shaping their institutional and personal leadership approaches

(2) confident in the critical analysis of ideas relating to leadership theory and models in the context of health professional education

(3) proficient in advancing change through a critical appreciation of the context and culture relating to change management – both personally and in their institution and

(4) through their studies and supported assignment be equipped to explore an area of interest in terms of leadership relevant to their own educational context.

The module content covers four broad areas, each filling two weeks or study time:

Weeks 1 & 2: Institutional and personal leadership.

Students will have the information, support and time to explore their own personal leadership style and skills and that of their host institutions in the context of health professions education.

Week 1: Students will be encouraged to reflect on the qualities of those who lead on educational policies, programmes and processes; and leadership qualities need at all levels in their host institutions or workplaces.

Week 2: Students will explore, discuss and debate theories and models of leadership from the contemporary literature as they relate to health professions education.

Weeks 3 & 4: Leadership theory and application to practice.

Week 3: Students will learn to better understand different facets of leadership and management, including individual, team and strategic leadership roles.

Week 4: Leadership theory will be explored and debated in the context of healthcare policy and leadership at national or regional levels, and applied to the students own institution and personal responsibilities. It will equip healthcare professionals with understanding, expertise and skills to engage with the leadership and management issues they experience within their own educational domains.

Week 5 & 6: Understanding, managing and influencing change.

Students will improve understanding and develop skills relating to institutional and personal change, with specific referencing to change in the context of health care and health professions education. This will be achieved through an exploration of change in the context of organisational culture and national policy drivers; using discussion and debate based on contemporary models of change and literature and understanding how change can be analysed and better understood.

Weeks 7 & 8: Exploration of leadership issues in a personal context.

Students will benefit from the chance to explore one of these areas in more depth through their studies and through interaction with fellow students and their tutor and within a piece of written work based on their own involvement of leadership and change in education at all levels. Through this students should develop and demonstrate new knowledge and skills in this field.

Weeks 9-10: Synthesis and Assignment preparation.

Group discussions, study days, online tasks, assignments and tutor interactions allow students to build on the content delivered and tailor it for their own health profession. Examples will be drawn upon from across the professions as well as the wider education and workplace psychology literature. Multidisciplinary tutors will help signpost relevance and transferability of principles to students.
