This module aims:
To allow you to devise, research and write up an independent research-led project on an appropriate topic within the field of film and television. The project may be primarily a work of critical analysis, creative or technical, the final outcome may be a dissertation, a screenplay, a software artefact + technical report, a short documentary or experimental film + report
Module learning outcomes
By the end of this module you will:
Be able to work independently on a substantial research project involving the use of appropriate research techniques and methodologies
Be able to identify a topic and formulate appropriate research questions relevant to this topic in the creation of a project
Understand how to address a specific research question through the deployment of appropriate critical, analytical, creative and/or technical activities and techniques
Know how to identify, access and utilise appropriate research materials from archives, libraries and other sources relevant to the project
Be able to deploy appropriate critical, analytical, creative and/or technical methodologies in the writing or production of a dissertation, screenplay, report or digital artefact

Project Proposal (20%) is a 1500-word document outlining the focus of the work, and submitted in Semester 1 Week 13.
Dissertation/project (80%) is the final research artefact submitted in Semester 2 Week 14, and submissions vary depending on the type of project being submitted. Research artefacts will be agreed with your supervisor:
Dissertation: 10,000 words
Documentary: 3,000-word treatment, 1,000 words budget/scheduling narrative, budget and schedule, taster tape.
Experimental/Technical: 5,000-word report, media artefact
Screenwriting: 18,000 feature film screenplay OR 9,000 TV pilot screenplay and 6,000 word 'series bible'
