Module summary
The Applied Policy Project will enable you to apply your learning about the complexities of the public policy process and its contextual variables to a real-world policy challenge of your own choice. Through independent research (supported by a dedicated academic supervisor), you can demonstrate the knowledge and skills you have developed on the programme with regards to a project that aligns with your professional or personal interests.

Module aims
At the end of your studies, the Independent Study Module provides you with an opportunity to draw on the themes, concepts and analytical tools you explored in the taught modules for the analysis of a real-world public policy challenge from within the context of your study programme. You will engage in independent research work to identify a suitable topic for your report, develop a realistic research and writing plan, produce a coherent, in-depth analysis of your chosen policy problem, and provide policy recommendations. Through this work, you will be able to demonstrate not only your subject-specific knowledge and skills, but also your ability to conduct high quality independent work and communicate your analytical insights and thoughts in an clear and effective manner.
Module learning outcomes
Having completed this Applied Policy Project, you will be able
to:
1) Demonstrate advanced understanding and knowledge of key
theoretical and analytical approaches in public policy, including
concepts and tools as appropriate to your field of study.
2)
Formulate a research question and undertake a piece of independent
research using secondary data sources, with awareness of the social,
ethical and political context of policy research.
3) To present
and analyse findings in a clearly argued manner, and identify answers
to your research questions.
4) Communicate research in an
authoritative and accessible way both in written and visual form.
5) Undertake independent study and thus show your capacity for project
management, problem solving, time management, dealing with critical
feedback, working to deadlines, and preparing a longer piece of work.
