Module summary

This module consolidates your development in advanced vocal or instrumental technique, musical communication and interpretative ability and allows you to explore your independent artistic identity, culminating in the presentation of a substantial solo or ensemble recital open to a public audience.

Module aims

The module aims to consolidate your ability to independently design and prepare and presenting a substantial solo or ensemble performance that reflects your interests and identity as a performing artist.

By bringing independent work to your tutors, you are encouraged to consolidate an advanced level of technique and explore their own artistic voice in a critical, reflective and informed way. The subject-specific performance class is used to facilitate peer feedback and reflection, to develop your skills in presentation and communication with a live audience, and to encourage creative experimentation with interpretative options.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module you should:

  1. Be able to design and prepare a substantial solo or ensemble recital independently and efficiently through self-directed practice and rehearsal with the support of you teacher

  2. Demonstrate an advanced level of instrumental or vocal technique and musicianship sufficient to convey your interpretative ideas in an extended programme of advanced repertoire

  3. Show a critical, research-informed insight into a wide range of ideas, issues and creative possibilities relating to your chosen musical material (and its text, where appropriate)

  4. Be able to apply the research and preparation strategies taught throughout the course to develop a convincing creative approach that reflects an emerging artistic identity

  5. Be able to perform a programme of solo and/or ensemble music with confidence and polish, showing a professional level of understanding of public presentation and audience communication

Additional assessment information

EITHER

40-45’ recital of solo and/or ensemble music (100%)

OR

30-35’ recital of solo/and or ensemble music (80%)
+
2500-3000 word essay relating to the music performed (20%)

For both assessment options, students will be expected to offer a coherent recital programme of a nature suitable for a professional public engagement. A formative ‘programme proposal’ task with feedback will be used to help them develop their programming.
