Module aims

The work-based learning provides a means to put into practice aspects of mathematical and biological learning from the first two terms of the programme.  The placement will provide examples of the complexities of biological systems in practice and should encourage the use of creative skills to employ new or existing mathematical tools to unravel the mechanisms.

The aims of the placement are to

  • Provide an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and skills in mathematical biology, from theory to practice;
  • Provide a solid foundation for a career in industry or further academic study, such as for a PhD; and
  • Provide a bridge to external institutions and industry, via learning through practice.

Students will be expected to demonstrate a mature approach to their work practice in the placement institution.  Students should develop their research, interdisciplinary and interpersonal skills.

Module learning outcomes

At the end of the module the student will be able to

  • Apply acquired mathematical and biological knowledge and skills in an industrial or academic setting to fulfil an agreed role;
  • Adapt knowledge and techniques to best achieve results in the placement;
  • Understand the complete landscape of theoretical development and research in mathematical biology to knowledge exchange in research institutions or industry;
  • Plan and write a substantial technical dissertation on a given topic (see below).
