Module aims

This module will examine the main trends of research in the field of Strategic Management, broadly conceived. The module is embedded into the areas of research expertise in strategic management in the School for Business and Society, including Strategy and Innovation, Strategy and Society, and the Business History of Strategic Management.

Module learning outcomes

At the end of the module, students will:
¿ Have developed a thorough grounding in the different methodological, theoretical, and paradigmatic areas of research in strategic management
¿ Understand the ongoing academic debates and dialogues in relation to strategic management
¿ Understand the breadth and depth of how strategic management connects with other disciplines such as, among others, business history, innovation and technology management, organisational learning, and international business
¿ Understand the relationship between strategic management research and socio-economic “grand challenges”
¿ Develop the ability to critically evaluate and interpret research in strategic management

Module content

The module will be delivered through a combination of synchronous hybrid seminars and in-person workshops. Students will be expected to have undertaken extensive set reading in advance of seminars and workshops.

Topics covered in the module will vary in line with advances within the field. Topics might include:
- Innovation and strategy
- Strategy and society
- Business history and strategy
- Project management and strategy
- Comparative case study analysis

Details of Seminars:
- Seminars will be led by experts in the field and will focus on their areas of research specialism
- Students will discuss the topical, thematic, theoretical, and methodological aspects of the preparatory reading

Details of Workshops:
- Workshops will focus on advancing student understanding of the relationship between their PhD project and the fields and subfields of strategic management and will substantially contribute to student preparation for assessment.

Module feedback

Students will receive feedback on their assignment in line with the University of York assessment guidelines. A comprehensive module assessment report is released to students after the Semester 2 exam board.
