Module summary

This short non-accredited course introduces students to the essentials of Medieval Documentary Latin. It provides foundational skills for interpreting and translating Latin
documents, focusing on core vocabulary, morphology, and syntax. Through seminar-based activities, students will engage with authentic medieval sources to develop linguistic
competence and historical awareness. No prior knowledge of Latin is required, and instruction will be in English and Latin.

Module aims

This short course aims at providing basic knowledge, skills and strategies necessary to examine and interpret a range of Medieval Latin documents, such as wills, inventories,
charters and land grants. It also aims to develop some knowledge of Latin translation skills. Students will engage, individually and in groups, in comprehension and translation activities.

Module learning outcomes

  • The ability to recognise and employ core Latin vocabulary, especially that connected with documentary Latin.
  • An appreciation of the basics of Latin morphology and the relationship between the Latin and English languages.
  • The ability to understand the basic principles of Latin grammar and syntax, to engage with and interpret a range of Latin source materials.
  • A basic understanding of the Medieval world, which will enable the student critically to evaluate a range of medieval Latin documents, in relation to the politics and culture of the society in which they have been created.

Regular homework tasks will provide opportunities for ongoing feedback on progress.

NB Since this is a non-accredited course, assessment will be formative, with a focus on providing students feedback on interpretation and translation activities. Students who attend 75% of seminars will receive a certificate of completion.
