Module summary

This short non-accredited course is an introductory course designed for students with no prior knowledge of Japanese who wish to familiarise themselves with the Japanese language and culture.

Module aims

This course introduces students with no prior knowledge of Japanese to this language and its culture. Students will familiarise with basic features of the Japanese language and its writing system and will learn basic phrases to communicate in everyday social exchanges in a way that is both linguistically and culturally appropriate.

Students will engage in guided individual, pair and group activities and will have access to weekly resources available in the virtual learning platform.

Module learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • identify the main features of the Japanese language;

  • communicate in essential contexts, such as greetings, self-introductions, and exchanging information about family, friends, and personal interests.

  • engage in common social and practical interactions, including ordering food, shopping, navigating transportation, and participating in activities like visiting a house or discussing daily routines.

  • understand the basics of the Japanese writing system, laying a foundation for further study.

  • demonstrate awareness of social etiquette and manners in various contexts, fostering intercultural understanding.
