Module summary
This module provides an opportunity to embark on a more in-depth independent research project in a particular area. Typically, this module would be added on to another M-level module and would involve expanding the word limit of the essay component of that module by 5,000 words. In some cases, if the module convenor deems it more appropriate, this essay may be written a separate piece of work alongside the existing piece of work.

- understand and overcome the challenges posed in carrying out a substantial piece of independent research
- engage with and benefit from research supervision meetings with the module convenor
- demonstrate an ability to critique and challenge theoretical ideas which have been proposed in one of the sub-fields of research in Linguistics
- demonstrate some ability to move towards the resolution of empirical and/or theoretical puzzles that arise in the chosen area of research
- demonstrate progress towards
the ability to synthesise and to present complex ideas with
clarity
Module content
Students must be taking an M-level module that is suitable for extension. Typically, this would be a module that already includes an essay as an assessment component. The final decision regarding the suitability of the module for extension lies with the module convenor. As such, the student must consult with the module convenor ideally before (but no later than two weeks after) the start of the module to agree that a research extension can be applied to that module. The submission deadline for the research extension is the same as the original assessment that is being expanded or supplemented. In the event of deadline extensions, e.g. due to ECA, an extension should be applied for both the host module and the research extension module.
