Module aims

The semester abroad allows students to experience life in the country where the language of study is spoken. It provides opportunities for students to increase their intercultural competence and improve their linguistic ability. The semester abroad may be spent as a student at a partner university, as an English teaching assistant on the British Council assistantship programme, or as an employee on an approved work placement (as appropriate, and subject to availability).

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, it is expected that students will demonstrate:

  • Increased fluency in the target language in both speaking and writing
  • An understanding of various cultural aspects
  • Familiarity with the way the society functions, in the country where the semester away is spent.
