This module is taken during the year abroad by students in the BA (Hons) degree History of Art with a Language (with a year abroad).

Module aims

This module is taken by students spending a year abroad as part of their degree combining History of Art with a language. Living abroad enables students to extend their language skills and deepen their understanding of artworks and their cultural contexts in another country.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, it is expected that students will demonstrate:

  • Understanding of the culture of the country in which they are living
  • Enhanced understanding of how art-historical knowledge and skills might be applied in contexts beyond the UK
  • Increased fluency in their foreign language in both speaking and writing

Additional assessment information

Students are expected to fulfill the requirements of their year abroad, whether studying at a university or on a work placement. Demonstration of attendance/participation will account for 50% of assessment. The other 50% of assessment consists of an essay reflecting on the experience of living abroad in relation to their degree. If studying at a university, students are expected to take examinations in their host institution as part of their course of study, but their assessment for this module at York is entirely separate from the results of such examinations abroad.
