Module aims

The aim of this module is to enable students to explore the concepts of dementia care in a range of health and social care settings. Central to the module will be the application to their own practice of the Department of Health's 'Living Well With Dementia: A National Dementia Strategy' (DH, 2009) and the joint Department of Health/Skills for Care/Skills for Health, 'Common Core Principles for Supporting People with Dementia' (DH, 2011). The module aims to help participants understand the philosophy of contemporary dementia care, examine the contexts in which it is delivered, understand policy guidance for best practice and develop an approach to care that can be applied to their individual practice settings. The emphasis throughout will be on the concepts of personhood and relationship-centred care.

Module learning outcomes

Transferable skills are included within the module outcomes and met by students through individual reflection, group discussion, preparing for presentations, literature searching and seminar work.

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  1. Consider the National Dementia Strategy and its recommendations.
  2. Understand dementia and its impact on individuals, families and carers.
  3. Recognise the early signs of dementia and the value of early diagnosis/treatment.
  4. Identify the key elements of dementia care as they apply to own practice setting.
  5. Describe the concepts of personhood, relationship-centred care/the senses framework.
  6. Appreciate the need for effective communication in dementia care.
  7. Compare the current recommendations for effective treatment and support in dementia care.
  8. Be familiar with the Mental Capacity Act, Safe-Guarding Adults and Duty of Care in dementia care.
  9. Think about issues related to choice, risk and decision-making in dementia care.
