Module aims
The module aims to:
- Present students with a wide range of poetry forms that they will explore through close reading in order to inform and enhance their own poetry writing
- Guide students through studies of traditional and contemporary poetry; through fixed form and free verse
- Develop the skills, techniques and understanding required to enable them to express themselves imaginatively and with precision
- Encourage the idea of accessibility of poetry to be owned and enjoyed
- Reinforce the idea that poetry is a spoken art
- Develop students' abilities to critically evaluate their own writing and that of their fellow students
- Lead students to redraft and revise their work
- Guide students toward presenting their work in a professional manner.
Module learning outcomes
At the conclusion of the module the student should have:
- Furthered their understanding of the main characteristics of poetic writing in particular to:
- Grasping rhyme and rhythm
- Realising the importance of imagery
- Understanding a range of the poetic devices used to craft well written poems.
- Explored and written a range of poetic forms and understood their main elements.
- Begun to develop their personal style and voice.
- Demonstrated an ability to write poetry that is credible and original.
- Read widely the work of established poets.
- Furthered their critical faculties and improved their editing skills.
