Module summary

This module will introduce visiting students to the practical dimensions of a heritage project. You will explore the different aspects of a heritage project and the broad range of skills that could be used to work in heritage. The practice-based heritage field school will develop wide-ranging practical heritage skills through work developing a heritage trail for York. Alongside wide-ranging practical heritage skills the module will provide an understanding of the breadth and diversity of careers within archaeology and heritage.

Module aims

This module aims to:

  • Introduce the practical dimensions of a heritage project

  • Introduce the wide ranging practical skills appropriate to work in heritage

  • Provide hands-on experience of a range of practical heritage skills.

                                                                                                                           

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate awareness of a range of heritage skills and techniques  

  • Demonstrate a practical understanding of a range of heritage skills

  • An appreciation of a range of heritage skills and their application through their heritage field school project

Module content

We will introduce you to the many different approaches to heritage project development including securing permission and funding for a project as well as ways in which heritage projects involve community and volunteer engagement. You will develop your heritage skills and apply them in developing a heritage trail. You will develop new heritage skills and be guided by the module leader, department staff and with contributions from our city partners.
