As the new term starts, the Library and IT Help Desk should be your first port of call for any IT questions or problems.

Common IT queries Q&A

Where can I find online IT advice?

Our website has lots of useful help and information. If you are new to the University, start by reading our information for new arrivals.

I need to install antivirus software, can you recommend a free product?

We recommend Microsoft Security Essentials.

How do I connect to the University wifi?

By following the wifi setup instructions.

If you are a Windows XP user, we recommend upgrading your device as it will not be able to connect to our network for security reasons.

How can I connect my games console or smart TV to the wired network?

You can connect your games console or smart TV to the wired network in your study bedroom by registering your device.

Can I install Microsoft Office for free?

Yes! You can install MS Office 365 free of charge and use it on up to five different devices. The subscription remains valid as long as you are a student at the University of York.

Can I install any other software or IT equipment at a discounted rate?

Yes, as a student you can download some software at a discounted rate or for free.

When buying computer equipment for personal use, you may also be eligible for discounts on cheaper IT equipment from our suppliers.

Do you have any resources to help me improve my IT skills?

The Skills Guides provide online interactive tutorials and guidance on using a range of applications. You can also book a place on our face to face training to develop your IT skills.
