Business Development Working Group

The BDWG will oversee the commercialisation of University research, business engagement and development and monitor and report on activity and performance against University commercialisation targets. This will include:

  • Commercialisation of University research through licensing, spinout company formation or collaboration
  • Business development operational plans to achieve commercialisation targets and industrial engagement
  • Social enterprise evaluation and formation
  • University consultancy, industrial collaboration, CPD, contract research and research facilities exploitation
  • Enterprise policy development and implementation (consultancy / Intellectual property)
  • Business development marketing
  • Review and monitor IP licensing.
  • Major investment decisions will be discussed and recommendations made to Partnerships and Enterprise Committee by BDWG
  • Spin-out company formation and the management of the University’s interests in those companies will be reviewed in the BDWG prior to presentation to the Subsidiaries Management Group Staff and enterprise

The working group is tasked to:

  • Review and advise on commercialisation activities
  • Review the current and potential project and spin-out pipeline
  • Assist in the formulation of key business development operational decisions
  • Review and approve spin-out company, licensing and social enterprise proposals and business cases prior to endorsement by the subsidiaries management group
  • Review and endorse enterprise policy developments and implementation
  • Review, approve and advise on business development strategy, implementation of operational plans and KPI income targets.
  • Approve non-provisional patent filings and discontinuance of patent applications and granted patents.
  • Receive reports from OPPA, Business Development and CPD on future marketing campaigns.

Frequency and timing of meetings

BDWG meetings will occur every 4-6 weeks aligned to occur prior to the University Partnerships and Enterprise Committee and papers distributed one week before the meeting.

Governance / Quorum

Decisions to reschedule meetings due to unavailability of working group members or accept representatives will be at the discretion of the Chair. Critical business that occurs outside the scheduled meetings and needs an urgent decision will be dealt with by email and approved by chair’s action.
