Google Sites is an easy way to create web pages, for example for projects or societies. You can control what is public and what is private.

Sites are easy to create, and you don't need to know how to write HTML or other code.

Overview

Eligibility

All staff and students with an IT Services account can create Google Sites.

Creating a web page using Google Sites is as simple as writing a document, and you can easily embed documents, presentations and videos to develop interactive websites.

No additional software is required - you just need access to the web to view or edit your Site.

Your Site can use customisable themes, colour schemes and page templates.

Google Sites integrates with many other Google services so, for example:

  • your pages can be normal text, blog-style, list archives of files etc
  • navigation menus are generated automatically
  • you can include Google Forms to gather data from people, eg to register for a conference or other event you are hosting
  • content from Google Sheets, Google Maps, etc can be embedded, summarising responses, showing travel routes etc.

The URL of your Google Site will be:

  • sites.google.com/a/york.ac.uk/nameofsite

Where a Google Site is public facing - eg a recognised conference, event, significant project or similar - you can request an customised name of the form "nameofsite.york.ac.uk". This needs to be submitted to itsupport@york.ac.uk by your Departmental Computing Officer.

Please note, Sites aren't intended to replace department web pages on the University website.

As part of the Google Apps for Education suite this service is entirely owned and managed by Google, who will monitor for, identify and fix all faults.
Hours of support Help from the Library & IT Help Desk is available 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Your responsibilities

We expect you:

  • to place relevant information on your Google Site that complies with the University's Acceptable Use Policy
  • to ensure there are sufficient Owners/Editors for each of your sites, so that others can deal with enquiries or issues in your absence
  • to delete your Google Site when it is no longer needed
  • to let us know when a customised ".york.ac.uk" website name is no longer required so we can remove it
