Careers and skills

Our students often pursue careers in academia, or put the knowledge and research skills they have gained to work in the commercial research, business or finance sectors.

Our dedicated careers team offer specific support including a programme of professional researcher development and careers workshops and 1:1 career support sessions. They will help you to develop your employability portfolio and to engage in activities that will build up your skills and experience within and outside of your research work.

Career opportunities

  • Alongside your studies, you'll have access to a researcher development programme via our dedicated careers team. This includes workshops and one-to-one advice sessions to help you build a competitive employability portfolio within and beyond your research.
  • You'll develop skills in advanced quantitative (including Randomised Control Trials) and qualitative research methodologies, mixed-methods, implementation science, systematic evidence synthesis, health economics, and policy translation, depending on the requirements of your research. You'll refine vital transferable skills including critical thinking, problem-solving, project management, adaptability, and the ability to present complex information to diverse audiences.
  • A PhD in this field will prepare you for high-level strategic, analytical, and research roles across the public, private, and third sectors. You'll look to secure positions within higher education and research institutes, national healthcare and public health bodies, international governmental and non-governmental organisations, or commercial research and industry.
