Funding, scholarships and loans

We offer a number of scholarships and funding opportunities for international students:

We award many international scholarships every year, recognising achievement by applying a tuition fee discount:

Equal Access Scholarships

We're pleased to offer Equal Access Scholarships for undergraduate students who are seeking refuge in the UK. Successful awardees will not need to pay any tuition fees and they'll receive financial support to help with living costs.

Saïd Foundation scholarship

We are a proud partner of The Saïd Foundation, co-funding scholarships that aim to empower people through educational opportunities. The fully-funded Saïd Foundation scholarship supports outstanding individuals from Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Palestine who are looking to study for a one-year Masters degree in the UK.

Aga Khan Foundation’s International Scholarship Programme

AKF ISP awards support primarily Masters degrees, although PhD candidates can also be considered for two years of funding. Full-time distance learning degrees can also be considered for funding. The award covers tuition fees and living expenses. The awards are structured as half grant and half loan – students need to repay 50 percent of the award amount following completion of your studies. Applications open early Jan and close late March.

Other sources of funding

There are a number of external funding bodies that exist to support study in the UK. Government departments, international agencies, charitable organisations and private companies may also be able to provide financial support for certain subject areas. If there is a local British Council office near you they can provide up-to-date advice on what is available for your country and you can search for scholarships online.

If you’re studying the Shahâda al-Thânawiyya al-Ämma or Baccalauréat (General Secondary Certificate) you will need to take an additional course before being able to apply for an undergraduate course at York. This could be A levels, the International Baccalaureate or a recognised foundation course.

Other post school qualifications may be considered for entry to York on a case by case basis.

Postgraduate taught courses

For a postgraduate taught course such as a Masters, you would normally need a Bachelors degree from a recognised institution in a relevant subject.

Typically you would need at least the equivalent to a UK upper second class honours degree (2:1), however some courses will accept lower second class honours degrees (2:2). Actual requirements will vary by course.

• A Bachelors degree with 70% 'Very Good' from state universities and 80% from private universities is considered comparable to a UK 2:1
• A Bachelors degree with 60% 'Good' from state universities and 70% from private universities is considered comparable to a UK 2:2

Research degrees

For a research degree such as an MPhil or a PhD, you would normally need a Bachelors degree, plus either a Masters degree in a relevant subject, or some experience of conducting research.

To apply to York, you will need to complete an application via UCAS (the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service).

You can apply online for taught Masters courses and research degrees. You can apply all year round in most cases but we recommend that you apply as early as possible due to competition for places and funding application deadlines.
