Undergraduate entry requirements

The entry requirements below are provided for guidance only. The acceptance rate may vary by course. Other post-school qualifications may also be considered for entry to York on a case-by-case basis.

If you are studying A Levels or the International Baccalaureate please see our typical standard offers for GCE A Level and the International Baccalaureate on our course pages.

If you’re studying the Shahâda al-Thânawiyya al-Ämma or Baccalauréat (General Secondary Certificate) you will need to take an additional course before being able to apply for an undergraduate course at York. This could be A levels, the International Baccalaureate or a recognised foundation course.

Postgraduate entry requirements

Postgraduate taught courses

For a postgraduate taught course such as a Masters, you would normally need a Bachelors degree from a recognised institution in a relevant subject.

Typically, you'll need at least the equivalent of a UK lower second class honours degree (2:2). Actual requirements will vary by course.

  • a Bachelors degree with 70% 'Very Good' from state universities and 80% from private universities is considered comparable to a UK 2:1
  • a Bachelors degree with 60% 'Good' from state universities and 70% from private universities is considered comparable to a UK 2:2

Postgraduate research courses

For a research degree such as an MPhil or a PhD, you would normally need a Bachelors degree, plus either a Masters degree in a relevant subject, or some experience of conducting research.
