Support for international students

The University of York is a wonderful mixture of nationalities, cultures and faiths. We welcome students from almost 100 countries and as a result our students benefit from a truly international educational experience.

We know that when you are a long way from home, studying in a second language and perhaps experiencing culture shock you might feel in need of some additional support.

We offer a variety of services to our international services, which includes the following:-

English language support

The University provides English language and study skills support to international students through the Centre for English Language Teaching (CELT).

Before you enter

CELT offers a range of intensive preparation courses, allowing students to choose whether to study for six months, three months, two months or one month before starting their academic programme. Options include:

  • the York Academic Preparation Programme (six months, April–October): comprising general proficiency, orientation to British culture, academic language skills and (optionally) preparation for the IELTS examination
  • the York International Summer School (one month, July): comprising general proficiency at a variety of levels
  • IELTS for University Entry (ten weeks, July–September): intensive preparation for sitting the IELTS examination
  • English for Academic and Research Purposes (one, two or three months, starting July, August or September): comprising intensive preparation for academic study in English
  • Advanced Language and Study Skills (one month, September): combining advanced language development and academic skills.

After you enter

A range of courses is available to help you improve your English and develop the skills needed for successful study. Some courses are available free to EU and international students.
