Student ambassador Soul

As a student ambassador, I have had a lot of amazing opportunities throughout the year. I’ve gotten to take part in many online events from delivering presentations to helping to run events and creating vlogs and blogs. I would have to say my favourite opportunity I’ve gotten to take part in as a student ambassador was being a part of the “Proud to Be'' event that was run by the University of York for BAME sixth form students. At this event I got to talk more with amazing BAME student ambassadors and learn how much of a shared experience we really had- I also got to interact with the sixth form students and talk about my experiences as a BAME student to try and encourage them to make the journey to higher education.

Being a student ambassador has benefited me massively not only because I feel so fulfilled by the work I do knowing how much Access and Outreach programmes have helped encourage students who may feel like they don’t belong at University to progress into higher education but for personal reasons as well. It was through my student ambassador work that I discovered that Access and Outreach is actually what I want to pursue as a career after I graduate from University and I have got to gain so much experience and meet so many amazing people that are in this field.

I would definitely encourage other students to apply to become student ambassadors as it honestly is such an amazing opportunity and an amazing job to have, especially as a student. The hours are flexible and work around your schedule as a student, which meant I was able to take time off during exam season and other work-heavy periods. I’ve also gotten the opportunity to do something I love - interacting with prospective students and even getting the chance to be more creative with some of the videos I’ve made, all while working with amazing people! If anyone was hesitant to apply I would just say - what do you have to lose? You get to have a fun job and get paid for it too!

My biggest tip for the student ambassador application and interview process is to be yourself. I know it’s so easy to put up a front and try and make yourself seem as professional as possible and though an element of professionalism is important, you need to let your true personality shine through! Everyone has aspects about themselves that no one else has which can be crucial to a team - whether it be great team-working skills from playing on a sports team or conflict-resolution skills from babysitting, so just be honest! This is also important as relatability is so crucial when it comes to live events where you’re interacting with younger students as I’ve been a part of so many events where some casual discussions about tv shows or hobbies have really encouraged students attending to open up before beginning the events which led them to contributing more throughout them! So it is definitely worth remembering to just take a deep breath and be yourself because the true you is always enough.
