Dancing on the Precipice: Avoiding the Abyss and Mitigating the Global Environmental, Political, Social and Economic Challenges of the Coming Decade

  • Professor Adrian Kendry
  • Tuesday 22nd January 2019, 4 pm, ARC/014

Seminar Synopsis

By 2030, almost 50% of a projected world population of 8.5 billion is forecast to suffer from water scarcity and severe water stress. Such scarcity threatens almost every continent and increases the likelihood of water wars. Without major changes and reforms in global governance, aided by the appropriate utilisation and implementation of artificial intelligence, the capacity of national and international institutions and decision-makers to find effective solutions to the myriad of global challenges (spearheaded by the accelerating and existential threat of global warming but also encompassing economic inequalities and deprivation) will be insufficient to prevent widespread and increasing social and political disorder.
