Interactive Planning Tool

CIEC’s Interactive Planning Tool supports children in working together to consider all the possible variables in an investigation. It enables them to organise their ideas and clarify their thinking throughout an open-ended investigation or scientific enquiry.

It provides a structure to help decide which variable they are going to change; which ones they will need to keep the same; what to measure and how to use the information obtained from the investigation to draw a simple conclusion. Guidance about how to use the tool can be found interactive-planning-tool-guidance (PDF , 347kb).

Role Badges

Role badges have been used by CIEC advisory teachers for many years. Due to their popularity with teachers, who comment how they promote team work amongst groups of children and lead to well ordered, productive practical lessons we are now making them available as a stand alone resource.

Working Scientifically

CIEC's Working Scientifically in the Primary Classroom supports all aspects of science enquiry from Early Years through Primary to Key Stage Three within the science curriculum for England. It contains progression grids, guidance and child friendly self and peer assessment posters.

The publication has been updated to reflect recent changes to EYFS curriculum guidance.

This resource is now available to purchase through the University of York's Online Store.
