A community of scholarship

We are a community of scholarship, where independent critical thinkers explore their area of study with passion and diligence.

Together:

  • we engage in the pursuit of knowledge
  • we are inquisitive, open-minded and inclusive, respecting evidence and argument, and recognise that this can include discussion of subjects and issues that can be sensitive or controversial

You can expect the University:

  • to provide excellent teaching and supervision, delivered by staff who maintain expertise in their field through research and sector best practice
  • to offer an inspiring learning and research environment, supporting you to develop your aspirations and grow your understanding, intellect and skills
  • to provide well-designed programmes of study, where the objectives and the methods of learning are clear and effective
  • to support your study and research with high quality resources, regular supervision, and timely and constructive feedback

As a student member of the University, you are expected:

  • to make the most of your time at York, striving for academic success and preparing for life beyond university
  • to actively engage with your studies, drawing on the resources available within your Department or School, our Library, Archives and Learning Services and our Careers and Placements Service to support your learning
  • to develop as an independent learner, adopting a proactive approach to study and research, and as a collaborative learner, engaging with staff, students and members of the York community where required
  • to use the feedback you receive to aid your learning and academic progression
  • to engage with the communications you receive from your Department or School and the University, taking action where required
  • to engage with academic staff and supervisors and reach out for support when needed
  • to uphold academic integrity at all times
