Space Planning Team
- High-Quality Environments: We aim to provide top-tier physical spaces that support hybrid working, reduce environmental impact, and improve accessibility.
-
User Engagement: By involving space users in the design process, we'll create configurations that enhance functionality, promote inclusion (EDI considerations), and improve space utilisation.
-
Maximising Utilisation: We’ll focus on increasing the use of modern, well-maintained buildings, repurposing or closing those in poor condition to reduce costs and our carbon footprint.
-
Data-Driven Management: Space management will be guided by building usage data.
-
Optimised Operations: Building hours, cleaning, and maintenance schedules will be adjusted based on space utilisation.
-
Centralised Teaching Spaces: All teaching spaces will be centrally bookable, except for specialist areas (e.g., laboratories).
We're already transitioning to agile workplaces, where spaces are designed for maximum flexibility, supporting various tasks and working styles. This shift includes more multi-occupancy and open-plan offices, fostering smarter, more collaborative ways of working.
Our world-class facilities feature study, collaboration, and social spaces that are shared and accessible to all students, fully aligning with the University's four core principles.
Environmental sustainability
Collaboration across multidisciplinary boundaries
Internationalism
Equality, diversity and inclusion
Our aims

- Spaces will be accessible, with designated areas for neurodivergent members of our community, Changing Places toilets, faith rooms, and breastfeeding rooms.
- Using technology to enhance and improve efficiency on campus for our community.
- We’ll respect local identities within departments and faculties, blending openness with a sense of belonging.
- Through branding and interior design, we’ll create spaces that are both professional and welcoming.
These changes will be implemented through continuous collaboration with students and staff, ensuring our spaces evolve to meet needs and support the University's future vision.
