Space is allocated to schools, departments, and professional services teams based on established guidelines, aligned with the University's goals of space rationalisation and efficiency.

To discuss space allocation, please contact us via email at space-planning@york.ac.uk. Requests will be processed according to your faculty’s priorities.

Types of requests

The most common requests that we receive and assist with include:

  • More Space – e.g., for a research bid or departmental growth.
  • Change of Use – e.g., converting underutilised office or workshop space into student society or social spaces.
  • Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion – e.g., creating faith rooms, Changing Places toilets, or neurodiverse spaces.
  • Giving Space Back – e.g., departmental reconfiguration to improve space efficiency and reduce footprint.

In 2024, we responded to a request for new space on Campus West to host taught sustainability modules for the 2024/25 academic year.

How do I submit a request?

Space change requests should be submitted as a departmental project through the Facilities Helpdesk under 'Report a problem / make a request.' The Space Request Group will then review your submission.
