QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020

We have eight subjects in the world top 100, three of which are among the world top 30

The University of York features among the world's elite institutions in all five subject areas featured in this year's QS World University Rankings by Subject. Three subjects are ranked among the top 25 in the world.

Social Policy and Administration (10), Archaeology (18) and English Language and Literature (22) all remain in the world top 30. History is ranked in the world top 50 and a further four subjects feature in the top 100: Development Studies, Linguistics, Psychology and Sociology. Overall our Arts and Humanities subjects rank joint 71st in the world and 15th nationwide.

Within the UK, Social Policy and Administration (4), Archaeology (5), English (6), Linguistics (10) and Sociology (equal 10) all place in the top 10 for their subject areas.

QS rankings rate universities according to their academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact. QS ranked 1,222 institutions in total. Close to 200 million citations and over 22 million papers were analysed.
