We are delighted to announce a new formal partnership with colleagues in Benin to strengthen our collective research on sustainable land management and biodiversity. This collaboration is marked by a Memorandum of Understanding with the National University of Agriculture and involves two leading research units dedicated to tropical ecology and restoration.

The Laboratory of Applied Ecology (LEA) at the University of Abomey-Calavi brings extensive expertise in managing tropical ecosystems. Their research spans vegetation ecology, biodiversity dynamics and the restoration of degraded lands. By investigating the complex interactions between plants, soils and organisms, LEA provides critical insights into ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration and water regulation. Their work also champions nature-based solutions through collaboration with local communities and NGOs.

Working alongside them is the Research Unit on Forest and Land Restoration, Assessment and Valorisation (UR-Reforest) at the National University of Agriculture. This unit focuses on the practical application of restoration science, using innovative tools like remote sensing and ecological modelling to monitor forest resources. Their interdisciplinary approach tests new methods for agroforestry and assisted natural regeneration, ensuring that restoration efforts are resilient to climate change and support local livelihoods across West Africa.

This partnership aligns perfectly with our research themes, particularly Resilient Socio-ecological Systems and Environment, Climate and Health. By bridging faculty boundaries and sharing technical expertise, we aim to create new opportunities to engage in solution-focused research that has a real-world impact.

Building these long-term relationships is part of our commitment to international collaboration. We look forward to seeing the innovative projects and shared strategic priorities that will emerge from this new connection.
